Actually, if you still want to see the effects, you still need to have that button popped out. To get the effect to affect the entire frame, click on the down arrow next to the button and then click on "Select All." You will notice that just above that selection are two selections that let you select just one half of the frame. You accidentally clicked on one of those. Having the effect work on only one half the frame can be quite useful at times in order to see A/B comparisons.
