I just completed a video of my daughter’s wedding, big project (for me) taken me months (spare time hobbyist here!). Final render and Youtube upload was great, really pleased with it. One evening I was sitting in bed and watching it on my phone (as you do) . It got to the vows, a fairly important bit eh? Silence!! The minister was clear as crystal but the bride a groom were a complete blank, not even ambient noise, just nothing. Panic! After some thinking the penny dropped. Why was it fine on a tablet but no sound on an IPhone? Intriguing isn’t it? A tablet and a PC have two speakers, an Iphone has one ie it’s taken my stereo and mixed it down to mono. You may have guessed that I use a Mid Side mic technique to get a nice stereo sound but when I came to the vows, due to the distance of the couple from the mics I used just the Side mic (the quieter) and put gain on it and copied to both L & R tracks ie mono. Sounded fine on the PC. The issue is that there is a MS decoder plug-in on the track which for those of you who don’t know how MS is decoded takes the side mic and adds it to the Mid mic for the L channel and for the R channel adds an inverted Side mic to the Mid mic. In short I had in effect put an inverted copy of the L channel on the R channel which when added together in the I phone mono mix summed to fat zero!
Mystery solved, lesson learned, check for mono compatibility and don’t put anything on the MS track except MS!
