Embedding chapter markers in video files

berniel99 wrote on 3/12/2015, 10:20 PM
I understand that it is possible to embed chapter information in the metadata of a video file.

I have researched and found that mp4 files support this functionality, yet, I cannot get this work within Vegas. Yes, I have set the option in the render settings, yet, the files appear to have no chapters included, when playing back in various players. (PC and portable devices)

Firstly, the Sony documentation indicates that this feature is only available in the file formats that support this option, yet, there is nowhere in the documentation that explicity states which file formats Sony will embed the chapter information.

Does anybody have a workflow that they use, which allows creation of video files (with chapters) that can be played on current generation PCs, Macs and portable devices?

Cheers,
Bernie.

Unfortunately, I don't think Vegas can do this. It is another example of something that they've had five releases to fix, but have never gotten around to doing anything about it.

You can use Drax to do what you want. Set the ruler format to time; export the chapter markers from the edit details to a text file; and then import that chapter file into Drax, after first loading the MP4 file. It only takes a short time to add the chapter marks.

Search this forum using "drax chapter" in the search term, and you'll find lots more information.

Vegas does not support chapters. It can only embed markers.
For embedding MP4 chapters, you need Vegasaur Markers or external software (eg. Drax)

Interesting...
Just trying out, but looks like not all player support this?

Standard Windows Media Player didn't
VLC and Apple Quicktime Player able to read.

How about hardware players ?

Search my posts for Drax.
It will work with Vegas marker information. Quite well actually…
No, WMP does not support Apple style marker.
Most other players do, but the .m4v extension is sometimes necessary.

Thanks Musicvid10, just trying out on PS3 and LG Blu-ray (+ USB Media player), chapter not working.

Sad about Sony's attitude, but great that there is a simple solution. I'll look into Drax now.

Thanks heaps for the great responses.

Nope, not on PS3, not on WMP, doubtful on BD player.
Again, mp4/m4v chapters are an Apple/iTunes feature, and unlikely to be fully supported in its competitors' commercial products.
What makes you think the attitude is all Sony's?

If you want chapter support, consider using the MKV container. Using Vegasaur, I can export Matroska XML chapter markers. Then MKVmerge to create the final MKV files. Works great on my Sony BD players. Also works with VLC and MPC-HC, but not WMP. I have tried MP4 chapters, but they don't work on my Sony player. An advantage of the Sony BD player is that supports 1080 60P renders without any problem.
