Encoding, rendering, authoring

Can some one explain a little bit about these words. I am confused. What I understand is rendering is the process after you done editing and ready to code to Mpeg2 to burn the DVD. As for encoding, I do not understand when I heard some one said you need a good encoder to have a best result for your DVD. Let see if I edited video using Vegas 5 then I used Roxio easy Media creator to burn a DVD. Do I have a good encoder. Now question is where is encoder at ? The first editing phase in Vegas 5, or the final phase in burning sofware such as Roxio or DVD Architect.
Thank you

Rendering is anything that assembles the components of a timeline into one cohesive file, regardless of the final format.
Encoding is converting to a highly compressed format from another source format, such as converting an avi to an mpeg. You can also encode while you render. Without spending quite a bit of cash, the encoder in Vegas is very, very good.
Authoring, is when you create the menus and links in a multimedia product, such as a DVD.

Thank you Spot,

So if I use Vegas 5 to do rendering to MPEG2 ( It implies I use Vegas encoder right ) Now question is if I have 2 diferent DVD buring softwares between Roxio and DVD Architect which one should I use and why ? or does not make any different

Thanks

I don't know Roxio very well, does it allow for menu creation, import of AC3 files, end actions? If not, then DVD Architect is the one for you. It's easy, fast, and super high quality. It's what I use for probably 70% of my work. The remainder is broken up between DVD Studio Pro (Mac) and DVD Workshop from Ulead. I was using Encore for a while, even wrote a book on it. But never could be as creative as I wanted to be with it, and I hated the photoshop dependency.

DVDA does a good job of authoring dvd's. It works flawless with vegas. Roxio is good only if you have no DVDA.
