Error Installing Vegas 7 on WinXP x64

QueenGeek wrote on 10/7/2006, 6:35 AM
I got an error installing Vegas 7. It complained that it couldn't find a SQL executable. I did a search and found it under the Vegas directory in Program Files. I thought it was osql.exe or something similar, but I cannot find the file now. I've been able to run Vegas and get it to function, but on restart, I got the following popup error:

"The MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR service does not exist or the current account does not have enough privilege to manage it."

Has anyone seen this? Any clues what might be going on and how to solve?

Vegas does not support WinXP x64 so you are not on a supported operating system. It looks like the Media Manager either didn’t install correctly or your account doesn’t have the privileges to run it. I think there are some other brave soles on this forum who are running Vegas on WinXP x64 and can tell you how they got it to work. Personally, I would not run a production environment on an unsupported platform but if this is just a hobby, then I guess experimenting is half the fun.

Yeah. Not much else will run on it either. Makes you wonder why anyone would buy an x64 machine. Maybe I should just go back to my oritinal x32 installation. Seems like such a waste for an x64 processor.

Added: For me this is just a serious hobby. I like playing. This is my sandbox. :)

Vegas runs flawlessly on x64. In fact, everything (and I mean everything) I have tried has also run flawlessly on x64.

There is no "trick" to installing Vegas, provided one uses the default installer routine, has .NET installed and all the latest patches from Windows Update. The only problem I can possibly imagine would be if it was installed in a custom location, that in itself can cause problems with Vegas on any operating system.

It could be argued that x64 is more stable than XP, but what is undoubtely true is that it is far better at handling memory and RAM, which is exactly what you want for an application like Vegas even if does run in 32 bit mode. XP supports a maximum of 4GB of RAM and will assign at least 0.5GB of that to other tasks, depending on your motherboard x64 supports 128GB of RAM and can run a paging file of 16TB. It's also specifically designed for multi-processor or multi-core machines and, of course, 64-bit applications.

Hi Stuart. Thanks for the reply. So far, with the exception of the one thing I noted here, Vegas is running like a champ. It rendered on my DC x64 machine in about 1/2 the time of my old 1.29GHz box. I had no problems buring a DVD which played very nicely on my 46" LCD HDTV. So overall my experience with Vegas on x64 has been really great.

Any ideas on what might be causing the problem with the media manager? I suppose I could uninstall and reinstall. Just don't know...

FYI... applications that I've found don't work well on x64 or have little support: 3rd party personal firewalls (had to use the built-in Windows one - ugh!), antivirus (had to switch to a new vendor), PGP, InCD (at least every version I have), Diskkeeper Pro (had to buy a new version), and packaged HP drivers (have to get "special" beta drivers from HP). Not surprisingly, MS products work, although I just noted that even PowerPoint runs in x32 mode.

As for memory management, it definitely seems better, but... I have 4GB and Windows was still paging out memory when there was 2.75-3GB real memory available for use. Annoying.

I run XP x64 on my laptop with Vegas, Photoshop and everything else flawlessly. The performance is so much better than XP x32, I am thinking about installing in on my main PC. Had to do something special during the .net installation, but otherwise no problems. During installation of .net, it will tell you to enter in a command line to enable 32bit support properly.

It's not a trick but something mentioned previously may not have been clear. Install the 64 bit version of .Net first. V7 attempted to install a 32 bit version on my first attempt. That's what gave me the exact same error at the first install attempt.

Same Here!

There's that, and also if you uninstall vegas and the media manager you also need to uninstall the MS part of it. If you're looking at the big list in the main uninstaller it's way up the list.

I uninstalled and reinstalled on a win32 system, and got the same error. Vegas won't install the media manager properly unless you've also removed the MS part.

Vegas runs just fine on x64 Windows and X64 Windows Server 2003. Make sure you installed the latest .NET 2.0 stuff.

The only two apps that do not work on x64 for me are Acid and CineScore.

Thanks for all your help. So, here's what I did....

1. downloaded the latest .NET x64 and installed.
2. uninstalled Vegas 7
3. uninstalled Media Manager
4. uninstalled MS SQL Server Desktop
5. rebooted
6. installed Vegas 7 & Media Manager

Got the following error:

The media Library database maintenance failed.
Unable to locate osql.exe tool.

7. searched for "osql.exe".

Found in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\".

8. verified that "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\" is in my PATH. It is.

I don't know why osql.exe cannot be found. It should be found.

9. clicked "OK"

Got "Sony Media Manager has been successfully installed."

10. started Vegas. Got no errors.

All appears to be well. But is it?

CineScore is also fine for me on x64. As is SoundForge before anyone asks! ;-)

>All appears to be well. But is it?<

If everything works I wouldn't worry about it. The Media Library issue was probably due to Vegas detecting the previous (broken) version prior to uninstallation and trying to fix it. On a previous system I found some elements of Vegas remained even if the program was fully uninstalled, I had to manually delete the folders.

I run the following on x64 XP:

Vegas 7a
DVDA4
Acid Pro 4
Sound Forge 7
PPro 1.5.1
Photoshop 7
GoLive 6
Audition 1.5
Topstyle Pro
Firefox 2.0 RC2
Opera 9.02
CDBurnerXP
plus other apps supposedly not meant to run on x64 XP. Vegas 7 installed without any issues at all. Must be something on your end.
