Error message prevents capture

When trying to capture from a DV tape I've suddenly started getting the error message "device AVerMedia 2238 Video Capture could not be opened. Make sure it's turned on an not being used by another application". I then tried the Windows Import Video capture and that worked OK. I'm using Vista 64 bit, and Vegas Pro 9.0b, and up to now had no capture problems. Is that "device" part of Vegas Pro? Any advice as to how to correct this?

I've experienced this once or twice. Something in Windows thinks it's still got exclusive use of that capture device and isn't letting go. About the only fix i've found for this is to reboot the PC. If you don't want to be that extreme, try moving the firewire cable to a different connector on the PC (assuming you have more than one).

I tried both. I downloaded and installed 9.0c and now even before I turn on a camera hooked to either firewire input, when I click on capture in Pro it immediately throws up the lock-out message. I'm familiar with computers latching on to certain ports (USB usually) or optical drives for some prgrams or drivers, and reboot normally releases them. Any more ideas on how to shake it loose?

For other reasons I did a complete re-install of my OS, reinstalled Vegas Pro 9.c, and even without plugging a camera in, when I click on "Capture Video" I get the same message locking me out. My OS is Vegas.

The AVerMedia device appears to be a USB model.
If that is indeed the case, forget about using it to capture DV tape at full res/full motion.
Firewire is the only way to do this properly.
If you don't already have one, firewire cards are very cheap.

I have firewire on this computer, but from what you say, Mike, Vegas is trying to connect to a USB port. When I first installed Vegas (before I did the OS reinstall), it did access the fire ports, but then suddenly stopped one day with this AVerMedia message. I've had trouble with Windows in other applications with a program latching on to a port and not allowing other access, but usually restarts clear this up. Nothing has helped so far. Any clue as to how to access the port assignemnt for Vegas?
