error message when rendering

When I'm trying to render a clip to .wmv I keep getting error message, then the app crashes. Never had this happen before and have used vegas for years now. It's part of my daily work and I can't figure out why it started doing this. I tried download the demo of Movie Studio and the same problem happened.

Error message reads:

"An error occurred during the current operation. An Exception has occurred."

The details are:

Sonic Foundry Vegas 4.0
Version 4.0d (Build 205)
Exception 0xC0000005 (access violation) WRITE:0x8515683A IP:0x5909B75A
In Module 'wmsdmoe.dll' at Address 0x59090000 + 0xB75A
Thread: ProgMan ID=0xAC8 Stack=0x244E000-0x2450000

Thanks for your help.

I'm just making some guesses here...

A quick Google search shows that this crash is at the base address of a Windows Media Player dll. If you recently did a Windows Update (or other update) and made changes to Windows Media Player, that could be the problem. See if WMP is running / loading ok. Maybe you should make sure WMP (and anything that could run it embedded) is closed while you're doing your render. And perhaps consider reinstalling WMP.

If you recently installed the Windows Media Encoder program (a standalone encoder), that could also be related. Or maybe you should install it.. You can recode an AVI using this app. But the settings might not be what you want.

Thanks for the suggestions but still have the same problem. I tried re-installing WMP and still no luck.

I even tried opening the raw video clip in Acid then rendering it to .wmv and same crash results. I can render to .wma no problem.

I don't know the problem, but in the absolute worst case, if nothing else works and you absolutely must have it in WMV, you could render to AVI then re-render it with Microsoft's WMV9 encoder.

Doesn't solve the problem, but would get you a WMV in case of dire need.

mediaxer - not sure if you've read this thread, but someone else had the same problem. They were using a beta version of WMP, and it was the culprit. Their player worked fine, but apparently the new dlls messed up their encoding capability.

i've tried a system restore, and tried rolling back to wmp 9, didn't help.

With windows movie maker I can capture and save to a .wmv no problem. But I like using vegas......

Did you add any effects to your footage? I had an issue where one of the effects did not agree with my project. I removed it (of course I did not know which one, but it kept giving an error at the same time on the timeline) and it worked fine. I just used a different black and white filter.

Nope, didn't add any effects. Just raw clip straight from capture. Same mothods I've used for years.

I tested my notebook which is running the same version of vegas and same version of windows media player. I'm able to render to .wmv. So this tells me something messed up with the desktop system, my main recording system.
On the desktop I can render to any other format, but when rendering to .wmv vegas crashes and closes.

Seems that I fixed the problem and I'm now able to render clips to .wmv.
How I fixed it was I searched for a newer version of 'wmsdmoe.dll', downloaded it, and replaced the older one.
Let the games begin!
