error rendering avi to mp4

I'm trying to render a MP4 video from an AVI, and every time I try I'm told that it failed but the reason could not be determined. I don't know much about MP4 but the options I've tried were Mainconcept AVC/AAC (*.mp4) and within that, either Internet HD 720p or Internet 480p 4:3. Per MediaInfo the AVI file is 24.4 Mb/s 720*480 (4:3) at 29.79 (30000/101) FPS. DV (Sony) (NTSC) (DVCPRO). I'm using Vegas Pro 11/0 (Build 371) 64-bit on a Windows 10 PC.

I can write the same except to a MOV file with no problem, writing to Video Sorenson 3 compression (best), 655 x 480, 15 fps, progressive, pixel aspect ratio=1.00

Did you try the better and faster Sony AVC with your settings?

Thanks, I didn't realize that the Sony options were there. But can you make a suggestion as to which of their many options I should go with? These are black and white videos shot on half-inch reel-to-reel videotapes during the years 1970 to 1974 on a portable Sony video camera perhaps 100 times the size of the Sony video cameras we can hold in the palm of our hand nowadays. Their resolution is not too bad, but far from wonderful. The screen sizes should come out to be about 640 x 480, although my current specs call for 655 x 480 based on the recommendation of a Creative Cow guru many years ago (maybe because of the pixel ratio I was going with?). As you may gather, I"m not real knowledgeable about these matters.

Thanks, guys. Yours were a bit small for me to read, John, and yours, j-v, get me in the ball park, except that mine need to be a bit smaller. What I found did work for me was the parameters in the screen snap attached - which may have different name that the choices you have available (for example, I have no idea why they were thought appropriate memory stick - in point of fact they will be shown on people's computers or over the internet. Oops, looks like mine is too small, too.

Suffice it so say, what did work was Sony AVC/MVC, 720x480, bitrate 1,000,000, pixel ratio .9091, fps 29.97

Maybe time to upgrade the program to a newer version with newer codecs and rendertemplates that meet your needs?
