Error when importing .mov file

NMP wrote on 1/13/2007, 10:38 AM
I transferred video from a Nikon still digital camera that also does some video, it transferred in as a .mov file. Whenever I try to open these files I get an error "The file format plugin for the specified format was not properly initialized". I have rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled, and still get the same error. I don't know what to do.
I am using VMS 7

I have looked for this topic here and elsewhere and tried some things, but nothing seemed to work and most of those problems were with earlier versions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

.Mov is a QuickTime format. Do you have QuickTime installed?
NMP wrote on 1/13/2007, 1:38 PM
I did have it installed. But I tried to import .dv (also QuickTime) clips and got a message that said that QuickTime was not properly installed. So I installed QuickTime again and now for both .mov and .dv I get a message that says "An error ocurred during the current operation. An Exception has ocurred." and when I click OK, VMS shuts down.

From everything I read, VMS is a very stable software (which is partly why I boutght it) and is supposed to be able to handle .mov files. For now I am assuming it is something with my computer and not the software, but I just don't know what to try next.

Will quicktime play the .mov file?

Yes, it does with no problems.

I just tried recording some video with my Olympus still camera. It also transferred to my desktop as a .mov file.

I had no problem getting the file into VMS or editing it. I am also using ver 7 Platinum.

I really don't know what to suggest you try, but at least I can assure you that .mov files are supported.

Thanks Albert.
I just don't know what to try anymore. As I said, for now I am assuming that it is to do with my computer, but I really don't want to have to convert all my .mov files to .avi everytime. So I was hoping that someone who knows way more about computers and VMS than I (it's not that hard!) could help.
I don't know if there are any conflicts with other software or anything else I could try.
I just opened my first VMS (a gift) and was really excited to try it, and now I am just really frustrated!

When do you get the error message?

Is it when you try to get the .mov file into VMS?

Have you just tried to drag the file into the project media pane?

Just a thought!

OK, I just tried it again and I am back to the original error message about the plugin not being properly initialized. This happens whether I go to the "Explorer" tab and try to drag to the timelline (as soon as I try to drag the file I get the error), or whether I go to the "Project Media" tab and try to import the file (after I click 'Open', I get the error).
I guess at least it's not crashing anymore!

Hmm....... I'm really sorry I can't be of more help.

Dragging from explorer to timeline....... no problem here.

Hopefully one of the "guru's" may have a suggestion.

Same plugin error message with QT & .mov file.
UN install QT; re install QT. Update to new version from apple.com while you're at it. Fixed this for me.
