Errors opening project from earlier version

Alan-Monument wrote on 1/5/2025, 9:18 PM

Hi.  I have been using Vegas Pro versions 7,8,9,10,12,14,16,17, and now 18 on and off for many years, and have never had any issues upgrading between versions.  A recent version 18 project started crashing on me when attempting to perform a Render.  Sometimes it worked, other times it didn't and I needed to reboot the computer to get the Rendering process working again.  I am not using the product in a professional capacity, however I find other cheaper solutions are just not up to anything but simple small projects, hence my continuous support and usage of Vegas Pro.

I originally chose Sony Vegas for my editing solution as I use Sony video cameras and expected the least amount of issues with video formats, etc.  This projects video files were created on a Sony HDR-PJ790VE HD Video Recorder. There are also some video files recorded on a Samsung Galaxy 21 smart phone.   Due to the Rendering crashes, and despite not doing much video editing the past few years, I decided perhaps I should update to version 22 as this should solve my crashing issue.  However on opening the project that was started in version 18 on version 22 I am now receiving an error message stating:

Warning: An error occurred while trying to open a project file from a previous version.
The proper stream could not be found in the media file.

When I clicked the Details button all my video files were listed with a "xxxx.MTS has changed enough that the media stream properties from the project file could not be applied.  Default media stream properties were used." against each file name.  Now, all the videos in the Timeline are blanked out and cannot be viewed in the Preview window.Luckily I didn't uninstall Vegas 18 and was still able to satisfactorily open the project in that version.

I then tried opening other previous projects in the new version 22 and I also get the same errors on projects that use video files from the same source, so I suspect the problem is with this new version using certain video file formats, as some MP4 videos taken for another project using a DJI drone open OK in v22.

The computer is running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit with SSD drives, 16 GB memory, Intel Core i7-6700 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti (all due for upgrading later in the year).

I would prefer to push on with version 22 if I can just simply just get past this issue without having to re-do all my projects.  Any expert knowledge into this problem will be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks in advance.

Here are the file Properties from the MediaInfo app for the two types of video files involved in this incident.

I don't know for sure but there maybe some issue with your recordings which have Dolby Digital sound as later versions of Vegas do not support Dolby due to changes in licensing. If this is the case maybe re-encoding the sound to another format may help. I'm sure some other experts here will know. Also upgrading your PC to 32GB ram is going to help. Here is a link to the camcorder manual and specs:

https://manuall.co.uk/sony-hdr-pj790ve-camcorder/

Last changed by andyrpsmith on 1/6/2025, 4:19 AM, changed a total of 2 times.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

13th gen i913900K - water cooled, 96GB RAM, 4TB M2 drive, 4TB games SSD, 2TB video SSD, GPU RTX 4080 Super, Windows 11 pro

Many thanks Andy. Yes agree on the memory, however much larger projects Rendered fine with that amount of memory in the past. When the budget allows I plan to upgrade to a bigger desktop as I am also an avid Flight Simmer and need that extra memory and a better faster video card, CPU, etc.

I started to suspect the operating system, as it has been constantly upgraded for 14 years with no refresh and has recently become slow to load; so I figured a good clean out would help, and I should format the C: drive and start again with a fresh Windows 11 install.

After installing some important apps I then reinstalled Vegas 18 & 22, and now 18 crashes when attempting to open projects with an Unmanaged Exception (0xe06d7363), and 22 is very laggy and as before doesn't play either the video or audio tracks from projects that previously worked fine in 18. I've spent hours getting to this point and it is now well beyond my ability to resolve. This is going to require a bunch of debugging so I will now need to get MAGIX involved.

@Alan-Monument Oh dear - "a fresh Windows 11 install". You probably now have an AC-3 audio problem thanks to Microsoft if you installed 24H2. Assuming you haven't already found this thread read it for the background to this unfortunate situation

Excellent. Thanks Eric. Ah yes, I didn't think this was going to be simple 😆 I'll have a look at that too.
