Events Jump around and overlap after delete

Hi,
I am having trouble with deleting events. After I delete an event from the timeline all the events around it jump around and overlap each other. This creates huge crossfades across entire events. Some of the events may be completely covered up by a larger event over it. Previous to the delete there are only overlaps for crossfades. What am I doing wrong? I have searched the posts on here and haven't found anything on it (perhaps I am using the wrong search words tho) Thanks in advance for your help.

You might have the "Auto Ripple" feature enabled. In VMS 6.0, its a little icon at the top of the window that looks like two short rectangles with a gap between them, and an arrow above them. The AutoRipple button is just to the right of the Automatic Crossfades button, which looks like two overlapping triangles.

If the AutoRipple icon looks like it is lit up in a white button shape, then it is currently turned on. Click it so that it is not lit up.

The AutoRipple feature is extremely useful when you want it, but I leave mine off except for when I know I want it.

For example, assume you have a bunch of video clips on the timeline, with matching title overlays (like peoples names, etc.) on a track above them. Now assume you want to insert a new clip in front of all these, or maybe in the middle of all these. You want to move all the clips to the right, and also move the title overlays so they stay matched up to the original clips.

You can do this by turning on the AutoRipple function, and then manually move the clip where you want to make the "hole". All the clips to the right of it will move together. Note: there is a drop-down arrow just to the right of the AutoRipple icon that lets you select how it operates. If you select "All Tracks, Markers, and Regions, then moving the clip on the timeline 10 seconds to the right will also cause all other events (audio video) on all other tracks, located at the cursor position or to the right of it, to also move 10 seconds to the right, so everything stays in sync. I think this should also work when you directly insert or delete events as well.

So, it's pretty useful when you want it, but I've accidentally left mine on at times, and moved or deleted a clip, and suddenly it looks like the entire project is falling apart because clips jump all around. As you noticed, if the move creates overlaps on events, they suddenly get huge crossfades. It can be startling. (Thank God for Ctrl-Z / undo)

I hope this helps.

Thanks... I appreciate the help. Are there any good books on running Movie Studio 6.0 platinum?

I believe that grouping events should help prevent this problem. I have only tinkered with this some, and I have gotten mixed results. That is, sometimes it does what I expect, other times it doesn't. Maybe I was just not paying close enough attention to what I was doing, but, give it a try to see if it does what you want.

Anyway, you should be able to select multiple events (click on the events while holding down CTRL), right click, select "Group", select "Create New". Note you may have to break apart an existing group first by doing a "Remove from". A video event is typically grouped with an audio event by default, so that is an example of an existing group that you are likely to encounter. You can create a new group, say two video events grouped with an audio event.

By paying attention to the auto ripple button, when deleting, I no longer have this problem.
