EX3 Timecode weird in Vegas?

fausseplanete wrote on 10/25/2008, 5:44 AM
Vegas appears to show the wrong timecode. Unless I'm missing something...

Set EX3 to GMT. Shot some footage on EX3 to PHU-60K hard disk. ClipBrowser displays the expected timecode, namely Creation Date = 04/10/2008 12:58:58. XLM file stored with the clip says the same.

Used ClipBrowser to convert the footage to MXF so that Vegas would accept it. Imported to Vegas. Project Media and Event Thumbnail show the Timecode In as 02:25:06:24.

Is this a known feature, and is there a systematic way to convert between these two "timezones" ?

I think you mix up timecode and data code here. 04/10/2008 12:58:58 is a data code which Vegas does not really use. Vegas can display the timecode though.

The current time code system doesn't even contain the date.

The "04/10/2008 12:58:58" date and time you see is what you can for example get the camera to put into every frame. It is just a "wall clock," not time code.

Thank you both, that makes sense.

Going into the camera menu I see the TimeCode mode is (as it was) set to "Rec Run". Which I guess therefore merely shows how long the camera had been recording (presumably regardless of media), accumulated, since its last reset. Indeed I looked at a few clips on the timeline and in each case the timecode starts one frame after the previous clip ends. Wish I'd set "Free Run".

A couple of lessons learnt here !

You can also set the TC to Time of Day in the EX1/3

Many thanks. I have now changed that setting in the camera.

TC/UB Set > Timecode > Mode: "Clock"

Since Timecode mode is then no longer "Preset", the Run mode is irrelevant (hence greyed-out in the menu).

At the same time, I altered the UserBits (UB) mode from its default of "Fixed" to (what I assume to be) the more live-event-friendly "Date".

Sure wish that training DVD I ordered a month ago from the US hadn't got stuck/lost in the post!
