Excellent free bulk rename utility

There is a really cool bulk rename utility http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Bulk_Rename_Utility/bulkrename.htmlhere.[/link] It will let you do all sorts of different file name manipulations on whole directories at once and I just love the GUI.

I started looking for something like this so that I could edit AVCHD clips with Gearshift. I wanted to be able to change all the .MTS extensions to .m2t so that Gearshift would recognize and work with them. Hopefully Gearshift will be updated soon to work with .MTS clips directly, but in the meantime, this utility can get you going.

It is such a great utility, I'm sure it will find many other uses as well.

Good tip Laurence. I've been using this utility for adding a prefix GSProxy- to DV files that I capture with SClive straight from my Z1 when I'm on location with a laptop. And also knocking off the last digit of the filename.

Then, by making HDV Split capture with the same file basic filename structure as Sclive I can use the captured DV files as proxies in Gearshift without converting from HDV to DV again.

An excellent utility as you say.

Thanks,
I've been using something very similar for ages but this one looks more polished.

There's a gotcha I just ran into two days ago.

Before using it, check under Options/Attributes. On my copy, changed files were automatically set to "Hidden" and I couldn't understand where the new files went, or how I could get them back. So make sure the Hidden attribute is not set.

One nice feature of this program is that you select the files to be modified, and then as you are making the modifications at the bottom you can see the effect on the file names at the top. Very cool.

Speaking of attributes. This program would be pretty useful for unchecking the "read only" attribute set on all the pictures you get on a typical drugstore photo CD.
