Experts: Tech Spt Re-install Instructions--agree?

hackazoid wrote on 9/21/2008, 12:40 PM
Here is what I got from Sony as had render crashes wirh 8.0a, then 8.0b would just disappear. I just installed 8.0c and have a similar issue. I'm not technical so while I could do an un-install, I'm worried about two things:

a. Messing with the Registry
b. I have VMS 6.0 which works--will this be removed or affected by 'a'.

What do you think--is Tech Spt being overly cautious OR are they right and I need to get a tech expert?

Thanks.

Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software. It sounds like you might be suffering from a corrupt installation of the software. Therefore, I'm going to suggest that you uninstall all of your Sony Creative Software applications. Do this by going to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.

Once un-installed, delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry
C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry Setup
C:\Program Files\Sony (Do not delete this entire folder if you have other Sony applications installed such as Sonic Stage, Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies, etc. If that is the case then only delete the folder for the Sony Media Software application you are using as well as the Shared Plug-Ins folder.)
C:\Program Files\Sony Setup

Once un-installed, click over to your Windows Registry Editor (Start > Run > REGEDIT). WARNING: The Registry is a very sensitive area to work in. If you are not comfortable with advanced configuration and system changes, ask an administrator to help you with this. Once in there, delete the following registry entries:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sony Media Software
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sonic Foundry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Media Software

Next, disable everything under Services and Startup in MSCONFIG. Do this by going to Start > Run, then type MSCONFIG. Click the Services tab, checkmark Hide All Microsoft Services. Now click Disable All and Apply. Now click the Startup tab and click Disable All. Click Apply and Close. Choose to restart the computer.

After removing all of the previous items, just download and re-install from the latest updated versions of software from this link - http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/download/step1.asp?CatID=2. These files will be the latest full installers for our software.

When finished with all reinstallation, please restart your computer. When your computer has restarted, your software will have a complete clean installation.

Sincerely,
Customer Service and Technical Support
Sony Creative Software Inc

You might also have to reinstall VMS. Can't comment on the value of this but it should get your machine to more of a baseline that support can address.

All support organizations seem to work off scripts until you escalate to an expert.
