Explorer - SLOW with lots of files

When using the explorer, say to add a photo, if the directory las lots of files (200 to 1500) the Explorer is EXTREMELY SLOW (in the area of MINUTES on a 1.6ghz machine with fast hard drive). From a programming point, it seems it is reloading the disk directory after each file. Otherwise, we can't figure out how it could be so slow.

How can we get the Explorer to operate at a normal speed? I don't like to wait 5 minutes when selecting a directory with lots of files.

You might try using windows explorer- that might be faster since not as many text fields are displayed. You can drag files from that onto the Vegas timeline, or into the media pool.
