What's the final output - a DVD? Or just a trimmed mpg file?
Is the trim just a straight cut or some kind of fade out at the end ?

Google MPG trimmer or MPG splitter. Should get you software that does this.

If you have Vegas 8 or later, it will trim MPEG-2 files without re-compressing. To do this, the render format must match exactly the format of the input MPEG-2 files. This can be tricky. You will know, during render, if Vegas is merely cutting the MPEG-2 files without re-compression because the preview window will go black.

Alternatively, you can purchase Womble and use the little utility that Womble makes that will take the text EDL that Vegas can save (it is an option in the Save As dialog) and converts that into a Womble cut list. This is what I use. Works great. Search on Womble and Cut under my user name in this forum for more info.
