Extenal monitoring question

When using the external monitor funtion, video looks nice & smooth until I get to an effect or place with a title superimposed, then it gets jerky (strobes). The Knowledge base says it's a computer processer problem. I've got an AMD 1.4 G running W98SE, 256 M RAM, two 7200 rpm ASA 100 drives, one for the OS and the other for rec & playback of vid clips. Drives are lean & mean; defraged, etc. Would more RAM do anything? Or do I need a faster CPU?

Have you prerendered the areas with effects or transitions? If you do, the video should smooth out. RAM won't help, but faster CPUs seam to. The system I work on at my day job is a Dual Proc system with 2GHZ CPUs and seams to do the previews more fluidly than my single Proc 933Mhz at home.
