External control of audio envelopes

I was trying out using my Peavey 1600x MIDI control surface (http://www.cassiel.com/space/Gearhead/Peavey+PC+1600) with Vegas... I had never messed with the External control setup, but I was looking for a way to adjust audio envelopes on a track by moving one of the sliders as the playhead progresses.

I saw you could assign a slider to adjust the overal level slider for a track, but is it possible to do this with the envelopes on the tracks themselves?

Yes, through Automation. With a bit of luck you can even get the scroll wheel on your mouse to write an envelope although a motorised fader is more useful.

Yep, you can do this with the 1600x.

When you set up the Generic Driver in Vegas, I will assume that you have correctly mapped the faders. You should also map the

"Channel Bank Down" and "Channel Bank Up" commands to permit you to move between more than 16 tracks/buses.

What you need to do to control automation is to put the 1600x into "Automation mode".

- In the Generic Control configuration dialog, select the "Assign" function group.

- Locate the "Toggle Automation Mode" Host command and assign/learn a button from the 1600x.

What this does is provide you means to toggle between a the tracks' trim gain mode and the tracks' automation mode.

Note: This is a global setting and indepedent of the individual track automation state in Vegas. That is, you could be showing automation on a track in Vegas, but if the Generic Control is not in "Automation mode", then fader moves on the 1600x will not affect the volume envelopes, but instead the track's volume trim.
