External Drive Problem

I'm trying to record live, with Vegas 6, a live accoustic performance. I've done this before but I'm having a problem.
I'm recording to an external drive with a laptop. Everything looks fine but when I start recording, the recording stops after one second. The cursor keeps going, but the audio waveforms stop after a second. When I record straight into the laptop, everything is ok.
The mics go to a Mackie, from the Mackie to an M-Audio Ahdiophile and from there into the computer via firewire. The Audiophile and the external hard drive connect to the laptop wit a PCMCIA card with 2 inputs. The only thing I can think off is that the Western Digital external drive went "kaput".

Does just the waveformdrawing stop , or the actual recording ?

Waveform drawing has a reasonably low proirity, and can pop up in 'chunks' is the system is very busy, or maybe if there is a bottleneck like the Firewite card?

Or do you gave an existing short event and the new event is recording 'under' the existing one, and may appear if the event end pulled out ?

The recording stops and the play head keeps on going. Could be a firewire bottleneck, but I have done several recordings with the same configuration.

External hard drive works fine on my desktop. Coul the PCMCIA be bad?

Not necessarily 'bad' , but maybe not up to the task of streaming (how many) channels from and audio interface and to/from an HDD, where as you desktop interface is (IDE or direct mobo connection ?)..
