Looking to purchase an external dvd +/- burner and trust the recommendations of this forum - any suggestions? (I have Vegas 5/DVDA2 if that makes a difference)
I suggest buying external enclosuers and internal drives (including HDD drives). Cheaper and more flexible. I have (4) Plumax enclosures for internal HDDs and plan to house a DVD burner in an external enclosure. IMO, its the only way to go.
thanks but I was actually wondering if anyone had any first hand experience with specific burners as far as reliability, compatibility, etc. I am currently looking at the Plextor PX-708UF, Sony DRX510UL, Sony DRU-530UL, or Pioneer DVR-S606
Fry's here in Dallas has Sony refurb 4x/8x? external DVD burners for $149. I can't decide whether to buy now or wait for the dual layers coming out soon.
Go with a Sony -- choice if USB 2 or 1394. You will never have a problem and down the road you can daisy chain them to make a cost effective duplicator stack. I have a stack of 5 and duplicate via Record Now Max with nary a coaster using Verbatim DVD-R media.
Plextor and Pioneer are generally what I recommend to folks. They have an excellent reputation for good writing. Either the Plextor PX-708 or the Pioneer DVR-107 are great burners to use inside an external enclosure.
As for recommending a specific enclosure for use with Vegas, this post has some good links. I'll let you make the final determination.
Also, make sure you get an enclosure with Firewire. The nature of the Firewire interface is such that it presents less load to the host CPU. USB, while technically faster at its highest operating speed, requires host intervention and presents higher CPU load. Ideally you should have both USB and Firewire in the external enclosure, but always try to use Firewire if you can.
