external hard drive

just purchased screenblast movie studio 3.0. I am comtemplating purchasing a external 120gb hard drive. my pc has a XP os; 8ogb hd; 1gig of memory; all usb ports are 2.0; plus two firewire connections. My question is can I load the movie studio 3.0 software into the external hard drive and edit from there? Or would it be more feasible to partition the 80 gig on the pc and use it? or is there some more creative options that i have available? looking forward to some answers, thanks in advance.

This topic is much simpler than most folks seem to think it is.

Always leave the software right where it is. The software itself doesn't take up that much drive space so you wouldn't benefit by moving it. Use the external 120GB drive for storing all the files that you are editing since it has more space and is probably faster than the internal drive.

Make sure your new drive spins at 7200rpm, minimum.

You might also consider purchasing a drive with both firewire & USB capability. This gives you extra flexibility if you should happen to want to drag it over to a buddy's house to exchange files.
