External Hard Drive Help!

I apologize if my questions are basic, but I'm still a newbee to non-linear editing. I am using Vegas 4.0 on a Dell 8200 laptop and want to add a 200gb external hard drive. Anyone have experience with Lacie? Also, if you are editing and rendering on an external hard drive through a 4-pin 1394 output, how do you print to tape from the rendered file on the external hard drive?

I have a Dell I8200. Experienced several difficulties, but eventually got it set up to work.
Belkin PCI card, 2-port, 6-pin, firewire adaptor out to a Maxtor 120GB HD and a second 200GB HD daisy-chained to the first.

Captured from camera into the integral 4-pin firewire and out to the external drives via the Belkin fine. Never, ever was able to reverse the flow and PTT back out through the 4-pin from the external drives. Would edit and render with the external drives. When ready to PTT, would send the *.avi to C drive, hook the camera up to a Belkin port, and PTT in that configuration.

You might want to do a search for "fangui" on this forum and access the free shareware there. The I8200 would fire it's cooling fans up periodically and the IRQ would cause blue-screen (BS) stutters during PTT operations. Good luck.

Thank you DGrob for responding to my question. I have attempted to search for "fangui" on this forum and can't get a result.

I also had a problem printing to tape with the I8200. I am going from the integral 1394 port out to an ADS Pyro A/V Link using a 4 to 6 pin cable. Then from the Pyro out to a VCR. PTT was unstable when *.avi was on the C drive. If I move the *.avi to the 40 gig second HD module bay it solves that problem. Next I would have 1 in about 7 PTT's go blue after about an hour. Used a Sony digital camcorder instead of the Pyro and that solved that problem. Now, thanks to your advice, I am looking into an external hard drive using the configuration you suggested. I will render completed projects to the 40 gig module. Question: Can we use a Firewire 800 PCMCIA with this system?? Thanks!

You might want to have a read through the ADS Pyro forum over at the Creative Cow site. By all accounts these things don't work right for most people, it would seem the best response ADS have is to suggest taking the unit back for a refund.

impact. I have 2 160 GB Lacies. 1 120 GB Lacie. and 1 250 GB Lacie. all externals. I just recently had trouble with one of the 160s But apart from that VERY very easy to use Just plug em In let Windows convert to ntfs then just drag an drop.
