Is there a good external HDV mpeg2 codec that I can use with VirtualDub? What I want to do is return HDV mpeg2 from VDub and the John Meyers Deshaker script. This would have the twin advantages of taking less disc space and smart-rendering into HDV mpeg2 masters. Any recommendations?
OK, I figured it out. Now my question is whether or not lightning fast smart-renders of deshaken footage are worth spending as much money on a codec as I did on Vegas!
It doesn't look as though it would work from VDub. Also it looks like the $450 version is limited to an upper bitrate of 25mbps. Oh well, Nero HDV is working quite well. All I am missing is the final HDV mpeg2 smart-render and a little disc space savings.
What's frustrating is that it should work. Not only that, but it should be the way many of us work.
Imagine, you shoot in 1080i HDV. You edit. If you just rendered at this point, it would smart-render beautifully, but you have some shakey footage, so you run the VDub script. If you run it as it comes, this gives you some absolutely huge files, so you modify the script to return Cineform. Cool, but the renders take a while and you find yourself lusting after quadcores.
If I could just return HDV mpeg2 from VDub, the files would be small and they would smartrender quickly into a nice Blu-ray / HD DVD compatible 25 mbps mpeg2 master. I would love to be able to do it that way.
Probably, but I want to output HDV resolution mpeg 2 from the John Meyers Deshaker script and have the HDV clips show up on the Vegas timeline like I am now doing with Neo HDV.
