External Monitor Setup & Questions

Hello,

We purchased Vegas 2.0 last week. We're new to Vegas, but
not to non-linear editing systems and DV. So far it looks
like V2.0 was a good investment. Plenty of goodies that we
can't get, even in Boris FX.

Our main NLE system has Canopus Corp's DV/REX M1 hardware
and software with their I/O breakout box installed in an
internal bay. This DV/REX box allows standard analog
video I/O (S-Video and RCA connections)and digital audio
(SPDIF/1394/Optical) as well as 1394/FireWire/iLink for DV
I/O via internal 'on-the-card' and external 1394
connections.

During editing in Vegas, we can not display video on the
external monitor, no matter how many configurations we've
tried.

The preview window within Vegas is nice, but for us we
feel that one needs to edit with an external monitor to
scrub through an editing project correctly (as we do with
the Rex Edit software now.)

We've ported DV through the DV/Rex's 1394 ports to an
external monior for a year or so now (as we also do with our
DPS systems with Premiere and Ulead's MediaStudio prodcuts.)
All the systems run Win98SE builds 4.10.2222 A.

In all of these non-Vegas configurations, DV comes out the
1394/Firewire connections directly into our Canon XL1s and
Sony cameras and from there we analog A/V directly out to
the inputs of our external NTSC monitors.

When we render previews in Vegas, we use the Canopus codec
(which is actually Sony's codec.) We can see the preview
video on the external monitor at this time, but not during
editing.

In the Vegas 'Preferences' pull-down, we set the 'External
Monitor' tab's pull-down box to the 'OHCI Compliant
IEEE1394/DV' settings. When we select this pull-down
option, the response in the dialog box below reads out:

"This device supports recompression
Hot pluggable device
Device unavailable"

This is without any other DV/Rex software running.

Do we have to first specify a capture program, such as our
Rex Video executable, before we can see video on the
external monitor?

Also, how does one control camera transport functions (FF,
Play, RW, Record) within Vegas?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Unfortunatley, DV REX is not OHCI compliant, and is not supported by
Vegas at this time. You can use any of the cheap OHCI-compliant DV
boards out there and get external monitor from Vegas. These cards can
be had for less than $100.

Thanks you for the swift reply Dave.

That's what I was afraid of hearing.

I'll also check with Canopus to see if they perhaps have a driver that
makes the DV REX 1394 ports OHCI compliant (if it can be fixed via
software... don't know until I ask.) Otherwise, I'll pop another
DV I/O board into the system (hope I have room).
