external monitor - VGA?

Is there any way to use a VGA monitor in place of a tv for an external monitor? I just need to move the preview to a viewable area and free up space for my track editting screens!!! I am sending a signal out from my radeon 9600 pro card thru an adapter from the flat pannel port to a 2nd vga monitor...but all i get is a duplication of my 1st monitor screen. I just want to show the video preview on the 2nd one...

In your video card setup there should be a parameter some where to "stretch my desktop across multiple displays". Right now you apparenly have it set to "clone" mode instead. Once you've switched to the other mode you should be able to rip the preview window off the first display and move it to the second.

THANK YOU...i will check that. I know there is a clone mode...I will check to see if I can 'stretch'. Is there anythink in the Vegas man. on stretching or moving the desktop?

I would assume not. This is entirely a function of Windows and the display card. Vegas has nothing to do with it whatsoever.

Hold on...

It depends on what you want to accomplish. Adding a monitor and spreading the desktop across the two monitors IS NOT the same as attaching an external monitor (TV) and receiving a DV signal.

So...

Why do you wish to do this?

If to simply unclutter your desktop and undock some windows including the preview window then the dual monitor options works fine.

But...

If you want a second monitor to COLOR CORRECT with, then a bad option.

Hundreds of other threads explains why in more detail. It boils down to this. If you are making a video that will finally be viewed off a TV, either by connected a taped video and playing back through your camera connected to a TV or if your burn a DVD and play that back through your TV you need to be aware that the levels and hue are very different between TV and computers. Hence the reason for using an external monitor to make color adjustments off of. You'll see how your video will look on the TV and adjust accordingly. If you simply show the preview window on a second computer monitor, then you're still looking at computer levels and hue. Result? Your finished project will look very different once you view it on a TV.

Of course if you're making a project to only be played off your computer or stream from the web, you can ignore all the warnings. In fact to use a external monitor for projects to be viewed exclusivley off a computer would be the same mistake in reverse.

right now i'm just trying to put the video display on one monitor, so i can free up room for my track edit boards, etc... i can't see to edit right now! just have never 'stretched' a display before - i saw on my radeon a 'clone' mode - but i don't know how to move sections of the desktop to one or the other monitor.

i see i will need to use a tv to color correct - thought i might use the s-video out on my radeon to go to something like the flat 14' monitor i've read about people using, maybe with a dazzle AD/DA box???
