External preview

Sorry that I need clarification for this, but . . . .

I understand the physical configuration using a DV camcorder with S-video out when it comes to external preview. What I'm wondering is if you have a video card that has an S-video out, can that be used in lieu of the firewire solution, and if so, where is the selection made to instruct Vegas to do so, assuming that the default is to send the preview to a firewire port.

I know what the manual says on pg.266, but I've seen people refer to using NTSC monitors with a Parhelia (or other cards) suggesting that the external preview signal could be routed through the video card instead of through a 1394 port.

Thanks in advance,
TBone

According to previous threads the output of the video card is not as good as the firewire jack. You can use the output of the video card for quick and dirty stuff but not accurate colors etc.

Your TBone ?! I was supposed to be "T BONE" !!!!

Cocoa the monkeyboy

Actually ,the S vid out on most card's ATI's , Basic Nvidia etc.are used to send out what your monitor is displaying, assumming you are using one of those type cards, its not the same set up as using the firewire output, you would be just viewing your preview window thru The S vid port . Most of the vga/dvi to svid/composite conversion in these cards are fair a best.
Any reason you dont want to use the Firewire thru your cam?

Thanks for the responses!

I'm looking at getting a Canopus ADVC-100 for a lot of analog capture I need to do (been using a Sony D8 with good results) for a more "permanent" setup and I'm sure I can use the S-video out on that for the external monitor. I just thought I might use the one on the video card for now, negating the need to connect my camcorder each time just for that purpose. Of course, I haven't picked up a decent NTSC monitor yet, but I've read here that ebay can be a good source for those.

I did not realize that the video card output would most likely be of lesser quality than going out through 1394. That takes care of that idea!

And sorry, Cocoa, about the handle - I was slapped with Tbone a long time ago by "friends" who think I like it better than my real name. :-)
