A FEW WAYS---
easiest---solo the audio track and then render it
:)

Hi!
For a rookie you could have added: press the ! in the track header (solo) and then render it as a .wav file.

For that matter, soloing isn't even necessary. Simply rendering it to .wav or any other audio-only format will do it.

Funny - I read this as if he were having a problem with the audio and video being grouped. Vegas Video does this by default so that you can move the video and audio around and they will stay in sync. If you want it to NOT do this, then you need to turn on "Ignore Event Grouping" while you move the audio around. I don't remember precisely where this option is (I added a button to the toolbar to do this).

Or....

Before you even put your clip in the timeline. Right click on the clip in the explorer and select "Open in Trimmer". Then, in the Trimmer, with your mouse, drag select the portion of the clip that you want the audio from, right click and select "Select audio only" then drag the highlighted audio selection to where you want in the timeline. Then you can render as separate .wav or you can leave it as is and render it together with the rest of your project. Shon

Or, you can right-click the event, go to Group, then select Remove From. This will make the audio and video for that event independent of each other.
