Fade Envelopes vs. Multicamera

jbierling wrote on 6/1/2009, 11:18 AM
I've been reevaluating my workflow and I thought I'd ask what people's thoughts are on doing multicamera editing with fade envelopes rather than using the multicamera feature. I've found the multicamera feature rather restrictive and the prospect of not easily being able to go back to the original tracks without "hacks" (running a script to recreate them) someone disconcerting.

Using fade envelopes is slower, but seems to be less destructive and more flexible.

Thoughts?

Way too much time invested in dealing with fades when you can just click a button to go to a new event. I don't think I could use fades as a replacement as there are too many clicks involved.

1) Copy your original tracks to new ones before creating the multicamera track, just in case you need them.

2) You can change the active take at any time. Drag the event edges to adust the duration. If two takes end up being from the same camera, ignore the split. It won't hurt anything.

That's the way I did my work before Sony Multicam in Vegas, and before acquiring Excalibur before that. Why would one go through that is beyond my comprehension. It's like preferring to go through periodontal surgery instead of flossing...

But when your project is littered with splits that you no longer want, its rather distracting.

Is there any way to remove them?

delete the event to the right and then increase the size of the event on the left to fill the empty space.

You're right, that works. But that's the perplexing thing about the Vegas UI. You'd think you'd be able to right click on the split and just delete it.

Similar thing with Envelopes. Deleting an "Inserted" Envelope isn't possible. Toggling it off is. Its the simple things...

Thanks.

Yes, after I have a project I am 90% happy with (by that time I have saved twenty or so incremental projects), I copy it, then go through and give it a thorough housecleaning. Getting rid of those little takes the way Edward suggests, deleting any prerenders and unneeded project media, unwanted audio takes, duplicated or temporary tracks, etc. etc.

Generally the preview playback perks up as a result of doing this, and I have done away with all the unnecessities and redundancies that would be confusing to me later on.
