Fader controls

Newbie question - I want to fade a music track in and out to coincide with a voice track. Can I do this without having to split the music track into segments and fading in and out of the separate segments at differing volume levels? Make sense? HELP refers to using the fader control to adjust music track volume but where do the changes in volume 'record' to? When I drag a music track from media pool the fader control changes the volume alright but how do I capture the volume changes? Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand, but click on the track you want to modify the volume and hit V on the keyboard... Then double click on the line to add points.

That process is called "ducking", where the music "ducks" down when the vocal is present. i don't know if there is a plug in available for that or not. Severe compression on the whole mix could do it, if you set the vocal real loud in comparison to the music bed.

In Vegas, volume envelopes are probably the way to go. This message is about a 3rd party plug-in that will perform ducking:

Never tried it though.

If your process must be automated, you might consider using an outboard compressor on your bed, using the voiceover on the sidechain. Your voiceover will control the threshold of the compressor and you can set and forget.
