Fading problem

For some reason my cuts have turned to fades.
I just removed them all, audio and video from the entire project manually.
Saved, and they are all back!
Anybody?
Haven't had this happen in 8 years +.
Thought it may be a setting in Excalibur, but seems OK.

Are they literally fades to black -- or are they cross-dissolves between events?
