@rgr

Can you tell me a little more about basicvsrpp_model_0(reds). In which app can this model be used? Is it complicated to specify parameters, etc..

3POINT thanks for the spot, but vegas doesn't even recognise the HVC progressive either!

andreas-georgiou wrote on 8/21/2025, 2:12 PM

@rgr that comparison was done 4+ years ago, Tpaz has improved a lot along with bugs he he but single render with plenty of options does what I need, see attached video from old MiniDV AVI to FHD progressive, massive improvement

@andreas-georgiou I cannot reproduce your issue with my (old) version of Topaz. Result is playing in default windows player and also can be reimported into Vegas. That your files are only played by VLC player and not by other media players says to me that those files are not correct. The issue must be in Topaz and not in Vegas.

That it's Topaz is obvious from the groom's beard, which has turned into a bluish stain (there is no worse noise reduction program than Topaz). And from the overall plastic look.

Judging by the whites (where there are overexposures, so details are gone forever), there was no luma level correction. Topaz probably can't do that anyway.

It's more of a destruction than an improvement.

I don't use it because it's under VapourSynth.

For me Topaz noise reduction gives an unnatural "plastics" look, adding some grain gives back some natural look. I'm not sure if it's possible to disable Topaz noise reduction.

@3POINT You are right older versions worked fine it’s the last year updates that have gone buggy, they seem to be focusing on the enhancement AI coding and changing the UI, imho the enhancements are great, they have options of adding grain with fine control so you can change that, some of the new enhancements are like magic on faces, I have R8 and S8 films 50+ year old and via Topaz upscale enhanced stabilised and fps up from 16/18 to 24/30 even 50 they look great when it works, every time I try to use it I find new bugs I give up at times like this one with the render /export engine

I was hoping that the knowledgeable veterans and new kids on the forum could possibly find out from the media info what is giving vegas and other media players such a bad indigestion!

if they get this fixed and the preview render they broke again then I’ll be sort of happy to use and consider upgrading

Topaz is completely unsuitable for these types of films. It doesn't handle VHS well, let alone these.
If you want to improve such videos, choose a completely different path.

The technical quality of the image is the same as the user interface or export. This is the ultimate example of a marketing-only product.

@rgr

What tools/apps do you use to deinterlace and/or upscale video?

Jøran

rgr wrote on 8/22/2025, 9:49 AM

Deinterlace - QTGMC (AviSynth)

Upscale - nothing, there are no good tools. Maybe this will change in the coming years. For now, it's better to do a good restoration and leave it in its original resolution.

andreas-georgiou wrote on 8/22/2025, 9:52 AM

@J-Toresen Vegas pro 22 (b250) colour correction, export high quality mp4, import to Topaz 6.2.2 deinterlace, enhance, uprrame from 16 to 24/30 or I prefer 50 and stabilise all in one render great options and adjustments cinefilms on worn jerky clockwork powered cameras on R8 come out great imho very watchable!

i’ll try and upload a sample if I can find them, I really need to organise my albums all iver the cloud and nas really bad

Initial stuttering was Vegas pro 22 (250) and then it got stack on full screen not responding had to restart PC, not even to CTL+ALT+Delete

Frame rate increased to 30 from 16 for the processed file and slowed down to 50% to match atmosphere

Original was digitised by specialist @1920x1080 16fps, compare the increased resolution of the bracelets, hand face hair of the previous Topaz enhanced footage and the stabilisation as well as the slo-mo all in one go as opposed to this original

Response from Topaz

"kyle.topazlabs Topaz Labs Staff

I have not been able to reproduce this issue yet on my end and the team has it on their list for investigation but I do not have an update back from them at this time.

Let me check in and see where this stands, we did have some users report that they have seen users that reported using a constant bit rate amount helped in some situations but not all."
