Feature Request - Vegas Pro Custom bins and Project folder Integration

Alex_Madrid wrote on 10/17/2019, 6:12 PM

I work with many media clips in a given project, (180-200+). I know, "many" is relative. I shoot sporting events like football games. Since it is much easier to move clips into "Custom Bins" in Vegas Pro, is there a way that folders can be created based on Custom Bin names? This can be done manually, but it is way harder to select the appropriate clips in the file system versus inside Vegas Pro. A simple "Create Project Folder" button would be great. Question for the scripting gurus on this forum: Is this possible via a script of some sort?

My example would be: after shooting a sporting event, I import all of my clips into the generic media area, and then move the clips into Custom bins ie. "pregame, cheerleaders, game-footage, fans, b-roll, whatever". It would be so helpful to see Vegas create a matching folder structure which contains all of the "moved" clips in my project directory. And vice-versa, If I select a project folder that already contains MEDIA files that are in sub-folders, just import the sub folders as Custom Bins and keep the media files in the corresponding Custom bin.

This would be very useful if you needed to locate all the "Cheerleading" clips on the computer or NAS, and copy them to a portable drive to give them to a Cheer coach. Not that it has happened.

I know there are bigger things for the Magix team to work on, but I think this would really be useful to many.

@Grazie

I think that the OP needs the exact opposite that the tools what you are advising is doing . Create files system structure from bins, not creating bins from file system structure.

@GJeffrey - I read this from @Alex_Madrid :

@GJeffrey - I read the above. Isn’t that it?

Thank you for responding @Grazie but @GJeffrey is correct. I would much rather have a folder created in my current project folder when I create a custom bin in Vegas. Then when I move a clip or a piece of media into that bin, it is also moved into that folder in my file system. I will look into media tool though, thanks. The idea of cleaning up extra, unneeded project files always sounds good, but I have gotten bitten before doing this manually. In the video it says that the Media Tool "empowers you with the tools found only in the very highest end editing applications", so after working through AMD, Nvidia, codecs and such please incorporate something like this directly into Vegas and get closer to that type of designation?

Just a follow up here. I installed the Fasst Apps Media Tool for my Vegas Pro 17. Seems to do a lot of "folder" and project bin manipulation. When working from folders to bins, it works as expected, and I am very pleased to see that importing folders as bins imports the media into the corresponding bin. But it does not do the reverse. Clarification, it will create the folders from bins, but not move the files into the folders. This could be very helpful if while working through a project you move clips from bin to bin. When finished, maybe in the future this tool could rearrange the files into the folders to match. I tend to reassess clips and move them from bin to bin while working on a project, so I may need to be more tedious when starting. 50% of the way there.

Thank you @Grazie for pointing me this direction.
