Field order help

thebrain900 wrote on 6/1/2011, 7:27 PM
In Movie studio 8.0 in File Properties there is a Dropdown Box for Field Order.

It is set to Lower Field First.
I do understand how Fields work with say CRT TVs.

When an Interlaced video is played the Top Field / First Field gets drawn on screen.
Then as this starts to fade away the Lower Field is drawn.

I am just thinking I sould have it on Upper Field First.

If your camera is DV, then it's lower field first. If it's HDV/AVCHD it's upper field. It depends on what kind of footage you're using.

Well is this telling Movie Studio how to display it as I capture it?
Or what is this setting for?

If your setting contradicts the original video, you may see a stuttering effect in your final output.

This commonly happens when someone uses an MPEG or DVD as a source video in a project that's set up for DV.

I am soory I think I am not asking in the right way.

When you pick say the Frame Rate in here this is how it will play back in the Timelines Previe window am I right?

So When I pick Field Order this is the order of the Fields that will be played back in the timelines Previeu window RIGHT?

Or am I lost on this?

I think your lost or making too much out of this.

Your project settings should match the settings of the video in the timeline, just as Eugenia stated.

Right click on the video in the timeline and choose Properties, framerate and field order will be listed.

What is your source video? Are you experiencing a problem that you're trying to fix?

No everything is working ok.

I think I understand now tell me if I have it and understand it?

If I will be editing a clip that is NTSC then I will put 29.97 in the frame rate.
If I will be editing a video that I know is NTSC then I set res to 720x480.

And Like you say if I know I am editing a video that is DV then set field order to Lower field first.

So if I understand it everything in the setting of Properties is to be the same as the video I will be Importing and editing.

Do I have it

IT DOESN'T MATTER.

Match your project to your media, use the render defaults for your output.
Vegas does the rest for you.

That is what I thought if I Rander As and pick say mpeg I can go into Costum Setting and Tweek what I want and even make my own Profile I get this.

Then what is the file properties and all these settings for?
thebrain900 wrote on 6/23/2011, 8:08 PM
This has nothing to do with Movie Studio but it does have to do with Video.

In Interlace Video 30 Frames go by a second and eatch Frame is madeup of two Fields.

A Top Field and a Bottom Field and this is how it works.
The Top Field is drawn first and this is madeup of all the Od Lines.
Then as the Top Field fades away the Bottom Field is drawn this is madeup of all the Even Lines.

Just tell me if I have this Right?
thebrain900 wrote on 6/24/2011, 8:39 AM
Now I know if you saw just the Top Field alone you would see All these Black Lines going left to right were the Bottom Field will be drawn.

This is why eatch Field is drawn a 60th of a sec so you never see any Lines and the two Fields look like they are onscreen at the same time but we know the First Field fades away and then the Bottom Field is drawn.

Just tell me if I have this part right Yes or No
MSmart wrote on 6/24/2011, 3:10 PM
Yes.

You may not have noticed it before, but have you ever seen where TV is referred to as 60Hz? Well "... drawn a 60th of a sec...", there you go.

OK then when I go into File Project Properties and I see
Frame Size 720x480 I get this it is for the USA.

Then I see Frame Rate 29.97 FPS I get this it is for the USA.

But I see Field Order Bottom Field First
Now if the Project Properties sould match the video I import sould I not set it to Top Field First?

Because the Top Field is drawn first on a CRT screen.
musicvid10 wrote on 7/1/2011, 3:09 PM
NO.

DV-AVI NTSC is BOTTOM FIELD FIRST.
Field order (dominance) and CRT scan order are two different things.
I tried a month ago to politely suggest that you are overthinking this non-issue.
Google is your friend.

OK I am back again but I am not doing this to Bug anyone I just have been reading more about Fields on the Net.

So now I think I do understand how TV Broadcast Video works. When they Broadcast Video they send 2. Fields a Top Feild and a Bottum Feild.

Whent the CRT TV screen displays it it shows Top Feild first and then Bottum Field second.

And I get how the 2. Feilds make one Frame and you need both to show Motion.

Now in Movie Studio project properies windo you set the specs for the Video you will open or import I get this.
So if you will be opening a Video from the USA you pick 29.97 FPS I get this.

But is this for how it will be displayed in the Previue window on the Movie Studio screen?

This is what I ment to say?
