Field order question

BobMoyer wrote on 1/24/2008, 5:50 PM
In Vegas Pro 8, the manual states on page 251 that the field order for video that will be viewed on television should be "Upper field first". I was under the impression (I have been a Vegas user since version 3) that it was ALWAYS "Lower field first". And the latter is what I always used for NTSC. Which is correct since all of my DVDs are for eventual viewing on TV not the PC?

We use upper field first for PAL SD, and Lwr field 1st for PAL (mini)DV.

NTSC use Lwr field 1st(?) for SD and ? field 1st for (mini) DV.

I don't know what Einstein thought of all these conflicting standards but I sympathize with your confusion.

Bring on Progressive HD!!!

Bob, that particular section is referring to HDV footage which is "Upper field first".

HDV is always UFF, NTSC DV is always LFF.

to chime in, PAL DV is always LFF as well...

my biggest concern is when one wants to downscaled from HDV UFF to DV interlaced.

A field order swap MIGHT be required, which is NOT a wise move in any regard...

Whilst PAL DV is LFF PAL going to the TV is UFF. You can see this easy enough in Vegas. Try selecting the PAL Standard template.

he provided a link which does the best job I've ever read of explaining all this. Swapping field order has no implications at all downconverting HDV to DV.
