File Archiving System

Having just finished my first project in VMS 10, I now want to store/archive all my files on an external hard drive.

In looking at all the files that were created for this project, I find they are quite extensive. I now have: 1) the original AVI files that I opened in VMS; 2) the VMS created files, including audio files; and 3) DVD Architect Studio files.

I was thinking of putting these in separate sub-folders under a main project folder.

So the main folder would be "1950s Movies", then a sub-folder for AVI files, a sub-folder for VMS 10 files, and a sub-folder for DVD AS files.

However, by moving all these files from where they resided while the original project was being worked on, I am concerned that I might cause a problem if I ever try to re-open the project from the archival external hard drive. For example, the VMS project file might be looking for the AVI files in a different location than where it was when the original project was created.

How do you professionals handle file storage so as not to create file path conflicts when trying to re-open a project after it has been archived?

We are not professionals here...

Most will simply store all related files in ONE folder, when archiving. Vegas is intelligent enough for that. When you later on open the Vegas file, it will ask where the missing files are. Then you simply point to that folder, and Vegas' built-in intelligence will import all the files into the project.

Also, are you aware that when saving a Vegas project, you have the option of also saving the media into that same folder, discarding the media you cut away? ('Copy media in folder'). This can be a huge drive space saver.
