"File Chaining" in Capture and Print To Tape set to "FALSE"

Grazie wrote on 8/20/2002, 3:35 AM
Okay, there is another INTERNAL option on Capture and Print To Tape.

At the end of the long list there is a "File Chaining" option. Does anyone know what this does? Yeah I realise it could be stating the obvious - but presently in my set-up it is set to "FALSE" not "TRUE". I should think this has always been the case since I installed VF. I was wondering if this stops/inhibits VF from processing AVI files greater than 4gb and allowing VF to do its knitting back together? As I'm still having PTT problems if this could indicate a "cure"?

Anyway, please VFers or Support people could you enlighten me on this.

Grazie

Grazie, I couldn't find 'file chaining', and searches didn't produce anything. Have you changed to true and have the results been better?

Thanks for that Laz. Nope it didn't make an iota of difference. It is proably doing something else - but it didn't help PTT.

HOWEVER look at my latest post "PTT Success" ... maybe just maybe I've cracked it this time.

Cheers Laz. As I hadn't got a response from anybody I thought everybody must now have been bored silly with my posts and quest for making WinME work with VF's PTT.

File Chaining is right at the bottom of the Internal menu in the Capture/Prin-To-Tape Utilities Preferences/Options - accessed by holding down the Shift key etc etc...

Grazie, how willing are you to try something else to cure this ptt problem? If it fixes it you might like to buy me a wee dram.
I could be wrong but I have an idea it could be the os (ME isn't the most stable). I realise your ptt with other suites is ok, but this could be an os conflict just with VF. I might be teaching you to suck eggs, and tell me if I am:

LOW SYSTEM RESOURCES - Cure:
Start/run, type msconfig, click ok. Click on Systemini tab and go down to the line 386Enh and click on the + box to open it. Look for a line that says MinSPS (some number, like 16). If the line is not there click edit and add the line. Start with a MinSPS=32, and add values in increments of 8. (A friend set his to MinSPS=48).

LOW MEMORY RESOURCES - Cure:
Start/run, type msconfig; untick all applications not needed on startup. With ME all that's needed at startup is StateMGR and any vitals like AV.

CHECK SYSTEM FILES AND REGISTRY FILES FOR ERRORS - Cure:
SYSTEM FILE CHECKER; Start/run, type sfc, and have os disc to hand (takes about 15 mins - plus there are advanced features for missing files).
REGISTRY FILE CHECKER; Start in ms-dos, type scanreg/fix

If these help all well and good. Anyway, it'll just be another process of elimination if it doesn't work.

Laz thank you very very much! - You certainly have given me some ideas to try out. I'm not that confident to look under the hood/bonnet of my OS - but I suppose I shouldn't be so scared - following on from your Scot comment "A wee timourous beasty!", I am! - What will happen, or is suppose to happen, in the 3 approaches you suggest?

Well, I recall a while back you noticed some memory leakages, so the low system resources cure is a good fix. This will probably speed things up. On the other 2 fixes, these are just maintanance really. Over time os files can start to muck around, so system files and reg files sometimes need fixing.

Another handy tool for seeing everything on your pc and how it performs is at Pitstop. It runs all sorts of tests, but you'll have to disable your firewall.

Good luck. If you run into any probs let me know.

Grazie, et. al.,
Just finished my first attempt at PTT that required file chaining with pretty good success. The project is 36 minutes long (many transitions, title, music, etc.) and VF automatically split it into 3 files (two 4GB, and one less). My only problem came after the rendering completed and the software looked for my camcorder (Sony TRV-120, digital 8)to print it to tape. Couldn't find it. I confirmed the camera was recognized by Windows ME and tried reconnecting several times with no success. What worked for me was to restart VF, switch to capture mode and let the software find the camera which it did the first time. Then, switched back to PTT mode and magically, the software located the camera. I then clicked the print to tape and off it went straight through all 3 files. Every time the file changed during the print I got a stutter (for less then one second) which is a pain but that's totally acceptable for my level of needs. I'm just happy to not have to break the show up into 15 minute pieces, produce each file, and then string the files together manually. I'm really happy with this capability even with it's minor flaw. Thought you would like to hear that someone else is having good results with PTT.
Aloha,
Randy

Video Factory was fine, working well, and yes, I did capture using USB Video Bus, even tech at company said that's not possible withthis software. Ignorance is bliss and it worked so well before software just disappeared off my screen and my computer.

I re-instaslled VF from Sonic homesite and it's not the same. I had 2.0, this is 2.0c. I can't open Video bus and that's my main source for capture. It also won't recognize my digital 8 Sony camcorder.

I need video software that captures via USB video bus. I want that to be VF, which did an awesome job before. Any suggestions?

ajhornbaker, if you open another thread we'll try and troubleshoot with you. It's a good idea to have a seperate thread to assist others in future 'searches'. (your problem could be to do with a number of things).
