file dialog thumbnails view

When I use the file open dialog, or the file import media dialog, I am presented with a view which uses 'thumbnails'. I have tried to change this to 'details', but the software refuses to remember this change and reverts to 'thumbnails' the next time I open a dialog.

I am running Screenblast Movie Studio v3 on WinXP. The default file dialog view in my system is 'details' as I have set this in an Explorere Window and then used 'Tools, Folder Options, View, Apply to all Folders' to propogate this setting to all folders. I have verified that my folder view is correctly set in other applications.

Please help. Incidentally, it was an exhausting hassle to register for this forum.

If you ever find an answer to this, please post it here and in every other forum you visit. The problem is not Vegas, or Movie Studio: It is Windows. The "common dialog" code is the culprit, and it does not remember these settings. Some applications (most notably Microsoft's Office products) write their own dialog code in order to get around all the limitations in the main Windows code. For most developers, this is a lot of work that has absolutely nothing to do with the main purpose of their products, so they don't write it (do you want Sony engineers working on "file open" dialogs, or on editing features?).

I have tried on several occasions, sometimes for more than an hour, to search the Internet for some solution (a plugin or a registry setting) that would solve this problem, because it affects all applications. So far, I haven't found an answer. You'll see all sorts of things about pressing the Ctrl or Shift keys when exiting the dialog, but that doesn't work.

Hmmm. Dunno. I haven't seen the thumbnails (at least on my own computer) in years. One of the first things i do when i start up a new computer is to open Explorer, set the view to details, go into Tools / Folder Options / View. There i customize a few things, such as turn off view as web page (ick!!!), display the full path in the address bar and title bar, turn off hide extensions, and whatever else i prefer. Then i click Apply to All Folders. Done. No more thumbnails ever, unless a certain program has it's own open dialog box that shows them.

Kelly,

I do almost the exact same thing, but I've never been able to get those settings to affect how the "explorer" view in dialog boxes defaults. In addition, many of the views for things like Control Panel and even Explorer itself will annoyingly decide to revert to some default. I have almost nine computers and it does it on all of them. I have reset "BagsMRU" in the registry and tried all sorts of other tricks, but eventually Windows decides to do what it wants.

Like the old "Outer Limits" intro: We are in control of your horizontal and your vertical ... " Gates' minions are in control of your computer at all times ...

Same problem here. I do it once and it's in list view. The next time it's thumbnail. No rhyme or reason for this behaviour.
BTW, I always run in classic mode and have the folder view set to List for all folders but the computers do what they want anyway. Maybe they've been taking lessons from my kids? I sense a conspiracy :-)
