File is Unsupported format

Wilbo-Beltman wrote on 10/28/2023, 3:57 AM

I'm a freelance video editor and I use VEGAS Pro 21. And a friend of mine also uses it and I often edit for him, sometimes he sends me a vegas file so I can finish an edit he started. We both use the same version of Vegas Pro 21. yet ever since switching to Vegas Pro 21, I can't open his vegas files. It will say "Unsupported format" which doesn't make any sense since we use the same version of vegas? I can't find anyone with the exact same problem so I'm make a post of my own in hope we can sort it out

Can he open your veg files?

Double check you are both using the same build number and that a Steam version isn't involved.

We aren't using a steam version and he can open my files, but the veg files he sometimes shares is just the footage with his pre-sets over it, so I can't seem to pinpoint where the error comes from. We are using the same build number as well

Please excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by "pre-sets".

Do both of your computers have identical or similar specifications particularly the GPUs - e.g. the GPUs are both NVIDIA or AMD? Also, are the settings in Options/Preferences/Video and File I/O the same? Do both computers meet the recommended specs for Vegas Pro 21? - https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/specifications/#productMenu

And if there are any 3rd party video or audio FX applied, are the same versions and builds of those FX present on both computers?

Presets ... have those presets been sent to you and pasted in exactly the same named folder destination on your computer as they have been saved on your collaborator's computer?

Are both of you using the same build of VP-21, though I am not sure it makes a difference (like the forward compatible version number).

Something between the two of you may be corrupting or converting the file. You could compare the file sizes between your end and the other end. Another possibility is to checksum the files on both ends (sha or md5).

Simple thing to check: Open the Media Files he sends you (not the Project) one by one in Vegas, and see which one won't work on your installation. It's possible your collaborator has an encoder installed that is not present on your system.
