File Missing?? No its not. HELP!

So I was working on a project last night on sony vegas pro 8. All going well and then I stopped, saved the project and turned the computer off (all the normal way). But this afternoon when I opened the project it said that it could not locate the video files. But the files are still where they were before. When I try to replace the files with themselves nothing seems to happen. It seems to be loading but it takes forever. The files are there so why is it saying that they are missing???

Was anything on a removable that when you restarted the computer it reassigned drive letters? Do you have some media that was dropped into the timeline then later discarded and deleted? If so, did you "clean project media"? You could always click ignore and see what media is offline, check the properties and narrow it down from there.

If the files really are there, I'll speculate that it has something to do with file permissions: Vegas can't open the files for some reason. Perhaps you can try the Security settings on one of the files to see if you have read access to it.

no everything, clips music etc, was all in my video folder on my computer. Nothing was deleted from the timeline just moved around and copied and the copies have been cut down and deleted etc

Just had a look at files security and I have full access to the file so nothing to change there

Take a look at Edit Details to see the "assumptions" Vegas is making about the files.

From main menu bar View>EditDetails
Change the 2 "Show" option boxes at the top to "Events" and "All Fields"

Look mainly at "Active take name" and "File path" fields. Do these both match the actual name and path of the missing files? If not, they can be edited.

I haven't heard of this happening in Vegas 12 or 13 but in earlier versions, changes in these fields sometimes mysteriously occurred - worst case was the "replaced media bug" that used to happen randomly.

Edit: Also, in Edit Details, look at the timecode in/out for the clip. Is it a nonsensical number, or perhaps a range that doesn't exist in the actual clip? That was another problem from the deep past.

Edit 2: Just saw that you are using Vegas 8. That was a version that experienced these bugs. Definitely check these fields out in Edit Details. I would also strongly suggest getting Timeline Tools. It has a function that watches these data fields and will notify you if mismatches occur.

As a test - can you open a new empty project then drag the media to the timeline?
