file too big

I am using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum Version 10. I am taking videos from my Panasonic HDC-HS100 video camera, building the movie in the Sony workshop, and it renders it just fine. The file is approx 21 GB. After it renders it I send it to the Architect studio and it does it's thing. But after that it shows that the memory used is 37.1 GB. What is it doing during the rendering that is making it so big. I used to use Roxio and didn't have this problem but switched to Sony. Is there an adjustment somewhere that I can change to keep this from happening. There is nothing "special" that I am adding to this file. Just the video and sound.
Thanks for your help/.

How are you rendering the files?
Properties, please.

Do you want to make a DVD or a BluRay?

1920 X 1080 60i
and I'm making a bluray w sterio sound.

I create the project and save to my desktop, import the media, drag it to video file @ bottom, and save. Then I click "Make Movie", "Burn to Bluray", and "Bluray", click next and it starts rendering.
