files remained locked for edit even when not used

Unlike Vegas, which does not lock a file against modification except when
the timeline is playing, DVD-A will keep a media file locked even when it is
no longer used.

Example, add a .wav file as the background audio for a menu or page.
No other app can modify the contents of this .wav file.
Define another .wav file, or no .wav file as the background audio, and the
previous .wav file will remain locked until the project is closed.

In the preference, unselect the "media goes offline on loss of focus".

Ha, that is funny. In February I asked how to keep DVD-A from
reopening media when it loses focus.

Vegas does not reload all media when it regains focus, yet one can
still modify and save the media file, and when you switch back to
Vegas, the media is updated.
Two examples in Vegas:
right click on audio file, choose "open in Sound Forge". I then tweak
the audio file in Sound Forge, save it, Alt-TAB back to Vegas, and the
audio automatically changes in the timeline.
Switch over the Photoshop, tweak an image file, save it, Alt-TAB back
to Vegas, and it automatically updates the image in timeline.

Vegas does this without having to reload media files, and there is no
"Media goes offline on loss of focus" option.
So, it appears not to be a matter of opening the file, but rather locking
it against other apps' writes.

If Win32 OpenFile() is used, is this just a matter of setting dwShareMode
flag correctly??

Vegas ONLY locks files against writing when the timeline is playing or when
a file is being rendered.

DVD-A locks files against writing, and KEEPS THEM LOCKED the entire
time the project is open. And I repeat, even keeps files locked that are
not being used anymore in the project.
