Files won't open

DV SD file captured to a Mac and exported to a portabe hard drive as .avi won't open in Vegas.
Mesage is "an error occured while opening one or more files.
The file is most likely corrupted or of an unknown
format."
Experimented.
Tried exporting to .MOV with H.624 CODEC.
Got the footage on the timeline this time, but the files are way small.
Each is about an hour in length, but they are only about 4 GBs each and should be closer to 13, right?
If I edit these files the quality will take a severe hit when recvompressed as MPEG 2 for DVD.
Any suggestions?

Yes.

I'm sure they would.

Any suggestions?

I work with a Mac guy a few times each year.
He uses FCP and saves the files as MOVs on a Mac-fotrmatted external drive.
I use MacDrive, hook the drive to my machine, drop the files on a Vegas timeline and render.

Must be dislexic.
H.264 is what I mean.

Drop the files on G-Spot and see what the format is.
