"Filetype not supported"

Hi, my name is Scott and I have recently encountered a problem while working with Sony Vegas and was not able to open .MKV file types. A friend recently gave me a CD with some video he has shot. All the video was encoded into this file type ".MKV". I searched around on the internet and found the codecs for it. I can play it in a special type of video player, but cannot edit it in Sony Vegas. This is not so much a problem as an inconvenience. Does anyone know of a plug-in for Vegas 5.0 that will fix this for me or am I lost?
Thanks,
Scott

Is the camcorder shooting in native MPG2? In other words, is the footage already MPG2?

I have no experience with MKV (Matroska) files myself, but there's a Matroska FAQ in Doom9's forum. Maybe you can find some answers there. VirtualDubMod may be able to extract the video and audio from an MKV file, or convert it to a format Vegas can open.
