I haven't followed all of the threads lately so maybe this question was resolved. Recently there have been discussions that Sonic Foundry was in financial trouble and was considering selling off its video products or being sold entirely.
If it does get sold I hope it's to a good company with clout, but I'd be nervous if it were Microsoft. Microsoft seems to be anti-MPEG, anti-MP3 and is pushing its own proprietary format. It also is including Digital Rights Management (anti-piracy crippleware -- no copying, limited Save As functionality, etc.) into its new software.
Myself, I would be very happy if Microsoft was to purchase the rights to VV. They could then combine the Windows Media Encoder, Movie Maker and VV into one product.
If Microsoft plans to put DVD authoring into the next version of Windows, then either pick VV+DVD or MyDVD .. I would much rather have the former.
I would prefer BMW---by the way, there is a news release from yesterday about Sonic taking Vegas and their Streaming Media solution on the road for a series of company run seminars for educational customers----That might be a good sign or that might be a bad sign.
Lets ALL make sure we pony up the cash for V4.0 to help sofo from needing to "sell out"
Even though the new features in V4.0 - which ARE great for most, just not for me (with my VERY paticular/SIMPLE needs) - I'll now some how come up with the cash to buy it. I'll stand by SoFo.
FYI - vegas vid goes off to someone else (public comp that is) = support and everything else you like will be gone
