scale up the project. if its 720x540, change project to 1440x1080.

not great for workflow but an option :)

The project is 1920x1080.

Have moved to MB and fine tuned the diffusion filter. Should have thought of that before posting.

You could try increasing project resolution to 4K.

What I do is Duplicate Track.
Top track, no Gaussian Blur.
Bottom track, smallest Gaussian Blur.

Top track, lower the % opacity as desired.

Of course, plan a several day render.
