Firewire 800 -> 400 support

I am running Pro 11 (683) on Win7 through Boot Camp on a 27" iMac (100% PC - no virtual machine). When I connect a Sony DSR-20 DVCam deck for ingest or print-to-tape, I have machine control but no data transfer - either direction. iMac has a Firewire 800 port & I'm using an 800 to 400 (deck) cable.

Apple support does not believe this to be a Mac issue (hardware, video drivers etc. are up-to-date).

I was not able to find anything remotely close in the online knowledge base. Can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks!

[As with many other Forum posts, Sony tech support has acknowledged but not responded in over 3 weeks.

The older VCRs and cameras do not seem to work with Firewire 800.
We've found this has nothing to do with the software. I've got a Firewire card with both 400 and 800 ports. Under WinXP they work connected to 400 port, don't work connected to 800 port. Found the same problem with the Macs with only 800 under FCP.
More modern VCRs, no problem.

If you do get it to work using the Classic Drivers let us know.
