Firewire for new computer

I'm planning on building a computer for video editing - sometime next year. For purposes of downloading video from my camcorder - is it ok to go with the firewire hookup to the motherboard, or is it better to get a firewire card? In terms of cards, I was thinking about the Canopus 1394 card, though it is no longer on their website. If I go the card route, what's the best for downloading video?

I don't think it makes any difference. Getting firewire on the m/b means you have an extra slot for something else.

As for a card, as long as it's "OHCI IEEE 1394 compliant" you're golden.

Shouldn't be an issue, but on my system the built in firewire is a little picky. A couple of my hard drives work fine on it, some don't. Some of my cameras work fine on it, the others don't (at least that is consistent). I put in a cheap ohci ieee 1394 card from ebay and there are no problems with anything. I have a gigabyte board and have always used gigabyte and this is the first issue of pickiness I had, but no complaints otherwise. The built in raid works just fine for me.
