Firewire/USB passthrough question

My normal editing station is out of commison for the current time so I am using my backup Laptop for doing my work.

Only problem is my laptop only has USB 2.0 and no firewire.

I have an external 5.25 bay enclosure that supports both and I have run devices through it before to get to my machine (i.e. a hard drive in the bay with a DV Cam going through it) But ive only done this with firewire to firewire.

Can I use it on my laptop with the USB 2.0 plugging a firewire into the external bay and have Vegas see it to capture?

How about a PCMCIA firewire card for your laptop?

That was the next step. Just didnt want to go buy hardware if I did not have to.

Just make certain your laptop has enough speed to handle it all.
I've tried adding a f/wire PCMCIA card to my Sony VAIO (900MHz ) and it drops frames. Works OK capturing via inbuit port to internal 5200 RPM drive but has problems with external 7200 RPM firewire drive. Definately wierd. Drive works fine on the Monster machine so it's not the problem.
