First big project - audio sync off

Hello - Using Vegas 4.x I have 5, 20 minute segments of a wedding caprured in MPEG2 format. These were captured off a HI-8 camcorder. I can play each one individually and the video/audio synch is perfect. When I start adding segmnents to the timeline, the third one always winds up with the audio out of sync towards the end -it doesn't appear to be longer or shorter on the timeline if I look out at the end of the segment. But the audio runs ahead of the video. The 4th and 5th segments just get worse. I've tried everything I can think of to get the audio sync'd, but to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I'm certainly no expert on Vegas but I do usually get by.

Have you tried rendering the project? MPEG is a compressed format not really intended for editing, so it's possible that your computer might not be able to keep up in preview mode. Is MPEG the only format you can use to capture from your camera? If not, DV would be a better choice, as it's less compressed and is Vegas' native editing format.

Yes, I did render the entire project and it rendered just like it previewed - off sync. I captured using an Adaptec AVC-2200 , S-Video and normal audio. It's default (and I believe only) capture format is MPEG-2 as it encodes on the fly. The camera is a Sony Hi-8, so I don't have many choices for capture. I'm going to get a DV eventually, but I have what I have for now. I thought maybe I could convert from MPEG-2 to AVI or somesuch but haven't found a tool to do so. I know it would make editing much easier.

If you capture analog signal fron analog source you should have option to capture in avi uncompressed format what is best for video editing.
In you case -I would render segment at time and see how each segment come out-render in avi.Then you can render all and do not lose much of quakity.I do not use mpeg until I am ready to transfer to dvd.
It is easy to find where the sync is mess up and correct it in timeline.
Most of the time-the vegas will sync a/v.
