I tried my first DVD burn tonight, and it failed with the following error:

CD/DVD Operation
The drive has been reset, most likely by another application or due to a SCSI/IDE configuration problem.
You can press the details button for further information.
(pressing details gives you the following)
'SFMMCX'-(17)
'atapi'-(0)
-'HP DVD Writer 740b HJ24'-(0)
Module sfmmcx.cpp Line 1275
The drive state has changed.
A power-on reset or bus-reset has occurred.

Please be able to help... Quick rundown of my history :
used another editor for years - worked great - burned many dvds - bought new computer - old editor won't work any more - got frustrated - found Vegas - LOVED the demo - bought the program - made several .avi, .wmv files learning editing basics - got gutsy enough to try a DVD burn - it failed - I cried - I posted this message.

I guess I should add that I was using a Memorex DVD+RW disk - it had been used before (in other attempts with old software) and erased prior to this attempt.

If you put a blank DVD in your burner and wait for a bit, do you get a pop-up dialog asking if you want to format the DVD for file storage? If so, you've got some software running in the background that's causing your problem with DVDAS burning. Disable this software and it should help.

I used Movie Studio 4 for about a year. I burned DVDs without a hitch all that time. I then upgraded to VMS 6 Platinum and found I couldn't burn DVDs any more - roughly the same error as yours. I found this somewhat ironic as my DVD burner is a Sony. My fix was to download and install the latest version of VMS 6 Platinum. It all works beautifully now.

If, however, you are already on the latest version then I can offer no solution other than to just PREPARE the DVD as normal, then write the DVD folder to DVD using your regular burning software (Roxio/Nero, etc.). It amounts to exactly the same thing.

I don't *think* anything else is running that should be accessing the drive, but I'll try your test to see.

This is a new purchase/install, but I guess there could be an update for it - how do I find out?

I REALLY don't want to have to resort to using another app to burn the disk. That would mean edit in one app, make menu in another app, then burn in a third... no thanks...

I'm going to try working with this again tonight (my time is pretty limited for troublshooting) so if anyone else has any ideas I can check, I'd appreciate it so that I can "run the list of things to try" while I have time to play - -I mean work...

Well, it happened again, with a new disk (another Memorex DVD+RW) - that is the only rewritables that I have, so I figured I would try a +R (unknown brand, inkjet printable) and it worked! Holy Smoke! I made a DVD with Vegas!

I guess the problem is with the Memorex disks - or maybe the problem is with +RW in general - I don't know. I will try to do some more testing, because I certainly hope to find some form of RW that I can use reliably. It has always been my habit to burn to RW first to be sure it looks like I want it to, then just make a copy of that to R.

In the meantime, I'm going to start work on a real project - this was a very short test thing, with 3 random ~20 second clips just to get a feel for DVDAS and to see if it would burn a functional disk.

If this is indeed my problem, I'm a happy camper... Anyone else have problems with the combination HP DL burner and Memorex +RW disks?

I've always used DVD-R's, and have not had any problems, even though one of my DVD players is pretty old, and the ones in my kids rooms are newer but don't specifically claim support for recordable discs.

However, I also like to try RW's first (Maxell DVD-RW) -- to preview my projects and menues, etc. -- and sometimes have problems with the players freezing or hesitating, as you describe.

EDIT: Oops -- wrong thread! I guess I meant to post this with the other message talking about DVD's freezing up. Sorry!

>(unknown brand, inkjet printable) and it worked!

You should be aware that the manufacturer of a DVD isn't always the name on the label! There's an app called DVDIdentifier which will tell you the real details of a blank DVD. Once you know what DVDs do and don't work you can find out the other names they're sold as.

And just to keep you on your toes, the big name companys don't always use the same manufacturers!
